QUILTING INSPIRATION: From Inspiration to Completion
with Beatriz Grayson
Quilting Inspiration is directed to students who, having done their share of traditional, classical quilting, want to move beyond the grid and find new means of expression, acquire knowledge of design elements, and principles. This workshop is particularly interesting for quilters who want to expand a theme into a series of quilts.
In this workshop students are taught how to see what they are looking at; how to derive inspiration for not just one but for multiple quilt designs from their favorite photos; how to go from a drawing to a finished quilt. We will go over elements and principles of art and what makes for good compositions.

About Bea Grayson: As a three year old, Bea Grayson was crawling under her mother's worktables, helping out the dressmaker by picking up her fallen pins. By age four, she had learned to sew and at age fifteen she set up her own bookbinding studio. She has a fine arts education, having attended the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Art Students League, and Pratt Institute, where she studied interior design, small structures, furniture design, graphic design, and stage and costume design
It took me decades though to find my preferred medium of artistic expression: textiles. Once I made that connection I never looked back. With every piece I create, I learn something new. My education is still going on.
All my quilts reflect loves and interests, past and present. I work on registering quiet visual moments, exploring memories of my travels, of cities, villages, gardens and beaches I walked through with curiosity, delight and often awe. At times these memories are aided by photos I have taken. Other times I just try to find the essential. On occasion I just make things up. They are all episodes of a longer story, the creative journey from my mother’s sewing room to my studio.
Bea's quilt Maple Leaves has been a part of the Permanent Collection of the New England Quilt Museum since 2000.
