Quilters around the country are getting caught up in Civil War fever, creating reproduction quilts that recall those made for wounded soldiers during that terrible conflict.

NEQM Curator Pam Weeks and co-author Don Beld present stories of Civil War soldiers' quilts and the women who made them in their new book, Civil War Quilts. Forty-five patterns are provided for the reproduction of these quilts.

Civil War Quilts is now available in the Museum Shop. Join us on Saturday, February 25th when Pam Weeks will be autographing books from 1-3 PM.

If you can't make it on the 25th, call the Shop (978-452-4207 ext. 16) and place your order over the phone, along with any requests for personalized inscriptions.

                                                        March 2 & April 14, 2012
                                                        STUDY PIECES

Study Pieces is a new series of displays in the Classroom Gallery to enhance understanding and appreciation of quiltmaking or quilt history. Each month a new guest presenter will choose a different topic and approach to the study of quilts. In March, the topic will be Quilt As You Go: It’s Older Than You Think. On March 3rd at 10:30AM, Pam Weeks will present a brief history of quilt-as-you-go techniques. As part of the museum’s celebration of Charles Dickens in April, intern Kate Hansen will mount a display of printed patchwork, also called “cheater cloth.” On April 14th, Deborah Kraak offers a presentaion on printed patchwork in Dickens’ time. Bring samples from your own collection that illustrate the current month’s topic.

                                                        DICKENS DAY IN LOWELL

                                                        Picture
Did you know that Charles Dickens visited Lowell during his 1842 tour of America — or that he called his visit to this historic mill town “the most pleasant” of his tour?

In celebration of the bicentenary of the author’s birth as well as his visit here, UMass Lowell and Lowell National Historic Park are hosting a major exhibition March 30-October 20, 2012. The New England Quilt Museum is a community partner, designating April 14 as “Dickens Day,” with special programing funded by a Dickens in Lowell mini-grant from UML.

Join us at 11AM on Saturday, April 14 as quilt and textile historian Deborah Kraak discusses figurative motifs on patchwork prints. Kraak will focus specifically on those manufactured at Cocheco Mills in Dover, NH in the late 19th century, including The Pickwick Papers printed patchwork. Kraak’s recent paper on the topic of printed patchwork appears in volume 32 of the American Quilt Study Group proceedings, Uncoverings 2011.

At 4:30PM, the New England Quilt Museum will host readings from The Pickwick Papers conducted by theater students from UML and Middlesex College. The readings are based on James Albery’s 1878 play Jingle: A Farce in One Act, in which dialogue from The Pickwick Papers was excerpted to be staged in a dramatic format. Whether you have read The Pickwick Papers or just seen the historical printed patchwork based on the book, you’ll love this up close and personal visit with some of Dickens’ most memorable characters.

Please join us for this citywide celebration of one of the greatest authors in the English language. For more information on all the Dickens celebrations around Lowell, visit www.uml.edu/dickens.
